Meet Me on Monday

This is a blog hop that I participate in. Thanks to Java for hosting. You can link to the hop above and have some fun yourself. You meet the nicest people.

Questions:

1.  What are you wearing right now?
2.  Do you have freckles?
3.  What is your favorite Lifesaver flavor?
4.  What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
5.  Would you rather live without tv or without music?
---------------------------------------------------------------
My Answers!

1.  What are you wearing right now?

What I'm Wearing Today

2.  Do you have freckles?
I don't have freckles on my face anymore, but I used to when I was a kid. I have freckles on my back and I have to be careful not to burn.
3.  What is your favorite Lifesaver flavor?
I don't really eat lifesavers very often. But I like Five flavors.
LifeSavers roll wrapper - Five Flavor - 1950's
4.  What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
I won tickets from Booktopia to go and see 127 hours. Some critics didn't like it, but I thought it was really good. Some very cringe worthy moments and a bit gruesome in places.
5.  Would you rather live without Tv or Music?
I could easily live without either, but I would give up television first. As long as I don't have to give up my computer.

...and so February comes to a close.

Wow, what a wild ride this month has been. I got into the Graduate course I was wanting to do at University. So from applying to enrolling it has been pretty full on. Can't believe how many lines you can bypass by doing everything online now days. I love it! I had my induction which was same old stuff in some parts, but very interesting in others. I really enjoyed the Library visit - of course and picked up some more tips from the Librarians which was cool.  They were handing out a lot of lollies and free condoms and stuff on Orientation day which was okay if you're young, but not really aimed at my age group. But I did get a free phone sock and made some initial contact with Mature Age student support services.
I went to an ALIA WA (basically the Library Association for our state) meeting which was informative and at least made an appearance to pave the way for more networking opportunities. One great tip I picked up while here was about a website called Booko (for Australian's) which tells you where books are going the cheapest, which is really handy.
This month I have also been doing the Thing-a-day challenge which has a link in my sidebar and a page dedicated to my projects for each day here. This draws to a close on Monday, but has been really fun. However, I'm glad it was only a month long challenge and not a whole year. I don't think I could do it for a whole year.
I made a start on my two book challenges for the year, but I haven't been reading as much as I usually do because I have been doing thing-a-day and I also started the Tumblr crochet-a-long, which has also been fun. I will post a picture of my scarf when I finish it.
I've decided to forgo an android phone which I was going to buy with my birthday money and buy an e-book reader instead, so that I can read some things I've had sitting there for a while, including some independent author's work. I think that because my course is going to be quite heavy with computing, that my eyes need a rest, so I will be using the e-book reader for books and articles instead of reading them on the laptop.
I'm really excited about starting my course next week.
Anyways, enjoy your weekend and if you want to follow some people, mingle online or connect the links to the Crazed Fan Weekend Hop and the Weekend Wander are both in my sidebar.
Yay! Hugs,
Kat

Thing-a-day 24th Feb 2011

I had a very busy day today and I was sitting wondering what I should do for my thing-a-day, because I was stuck and I had very little time.
Then I came across this post in my RSS feed, by Sarah Werkmeister on the Six Thousand blog, where she talks about making a "jungle" using hydroculture. It's such a simple, yet adorable idea and I just had to try it. So now when I talk to myself in my study/studio/workroom, I can say I'm really talking to the plants.

The Crazed Fan Blog Hop & Weekend Wander

This is from The Blog Entourage.
Crazed Fan Weekend Hop

Crazed Fan Weekend Blog Hop!
Introducing The Blog Entourage's very first blog hop, the Crazed Fan Weekend Blog Hop! It will run all day every Saturday and Sunday.
And hop however you want, but I am not going to put in the rules that you should follow back anyone who follows you. Follow whoever you want to follow, and I encourage you to only follow blogs that you are genuinely interested in reading. Then you will be more likely to go back to those blogs and comment, which will get you more genuine blogging friends and readers, as opposed to the dreaded copy and paste of "I followed you, now you follow me."

This is from the excellent ladies at For the Love of Blogs.

let's relax and mingle shall we? welcome to the weekend wander where we basically just wander to all the blogs who link up! this is open until Monday, so relax, link up and come back often to check new blogs out.

I'm a winner - Yay for me! Yay for Pip!

I have been sitting on this news for a WEEK, because I had to wait until they came in the post. I'm so excited because I have won, not one but two of Pip Licolne's (aka Meet Me at Mikes) books in a competition from Hardie Grant Books. So here they are - arrived safe and sound.

My favourite project from the Meet Me at Mike's book is the fabric roll. I can see all sorts of uses for it. For my craft tools, or my daughter's hairdressing tools, for my husbands knives for my son's electronics tools. I hope I find time to make one really soon. It also contains the secret for pink lamingtons - which I have been coveting for a lifetime. The phoney flowers are cute too, and I might make some today as my thing-a-day.

The Sew La Tea Do book has lots of sewing in it. Now my grandmother was a fantastic seamstress. She used to sew uniforms during the war. She would also secretly make my mum trousers, because her father didn't like girls to wear them, but Mum needed them to jump on the back of my Dad's scooter.
My sister is also a fabulous seamstress. She made my daughter's beautiful wedding gown, from scratch and designed it herself. Wow! But alas, the sewing gene skipped me. That's why I love Pip's book, because she makes it all so easy. Did you see her on The Circle? She's just so clever.

Pip wrote a great piece a while back about being in awe of clever people. You can read it here. I think that's why I admire people like Pip and my sister so much. Now I can write a 1000 word essay on Shakespeare or solve an algebra equation for you. But creativity is hard for me. I mean it's really hard work! And I love creative things so much. I think I would go mad without doing craft - and I don't care if it's good or not - but just that it was fun.

Anyway, back to the books. I love the cute dresses in Sew La Tea Do, especially the Marlo dress. I'm keen to have a go at this, too. Even if you weren't that way inclined these two books are a lovely feast for your eyes. If you love vintage and design there are beautiful images throughout. I think everyone should own them. Lucky for us Pip has another book coming out soon.

So, in case you didn't get it - I have girl crush on Pip, but not in a crazy stalker kind of fashion. I just really admire her, as you can tell when I talked about her here and here.

So I'm going to try those flowers now.
Bye & hugs
Kat

Sharing the love.

Do you ever feel like you would like to comment on people's blogs more, but don't have time. I do. Sometimes people that I just love to bits don't get a comment because they have lots of followers and comments and they don't really need mine. I feel like I only have so many comments in me per day and I try to spread the love. One thing I've  noticed though is that since I've been doing Thing-a-day  I've been trying to comment on a few of those each day to encourage people. Mainly because I know how hard it is myself to stay motivated with these challenges. Consequently, I haven't been commenting on the blogs I follow very much, even though I have been trying to read a few each day. It means that I have had less comments on my blog and less visits. This is okay, because even though I love blogging and the blogging community I am really only doing this as a learning tool for Information Studies. But if there was any doubt that networking is the way to go, then this has answered my question.
On a similar note, I began tagging my posts on Tumblr as an experiment. I have been using Tumblr for quite a few months and had a few follow backs and then nothing. After I tagged posts, within two days I had more followers, more likes and more re-blogs than I have had the whole time I've been on there. So the moral of this story -- tagging really works!!

Thing-a-day goes on until the end of February, and then I am starting a new study program in the Graduate Diploma or Science (Information Services) in digital and security. Yay me! I'm so excited but I know it will be full on. Just know I am still reading your blogs whenever I can and will try to comment to let you know I have visited, even if I just say "Hi".

My thing-a-day projects can be found here:

Meet Me on Monday

Here is the latest Meet Me on Monday - A blog hop hosted by Java at Never Growing Old. One thing I love about this blog hop is that you get to meet the nicest people.
Questions:

1.  Did you get any Valentine's Gifts?
2.  What is your favorite topping on something toasted?
3.  Do you pick out your outfit the night before?
4.  What food item do you absolutely despise?
5.  Righty or lefty?
---------------------------------------------------------------
My Answers!

1.  Did you get any Valentine's Gifts?
I got a beautiful love letter from my husband. He's always been good at writing love letters to me. He wrote one the day we were married and sent it up to my room at the hotel while I was getting ready, to tell me he couldn't wait to marry me. Yesterday I made some Rocky Road and we had that with our afternoon coffee when he got home today from work and we chatted about our day.
I also got to have breakfast with my parents which was really special. They needed to drop their car off for servicing and when I picked them up, I gave Mum some Rocky Road as a Valentine. Then Mum made us all some breakfast of fresh rolls, fruit and yoghurt and a cup of tea.

2.  What is your favorite topping on something toasted?
My favourite topping on toast is pate. I love making it, too. It's so yummy. But it is a luxury, so for everyday I usually have Vegemite on my toast. It's a part of every Australian childhood.

    3.  Do you pick out your outfit the night before?
Sometimes. If I have something important on, I will organise what I'm going to wear the next day and make sure it's ironed and my shoes are clean, and I have a matching bag and earnings. But for everyday I usually just pick something after my morning shower. But I don't have to worry too much about everything matching because I mainly wear denim, black and purple. I made this little collection of my tastes in clothes with Polyvore. Have you tried it yet? It's really fun.

    4.  What food item do you absolutely despise?
Tinned Baked Beans. I can't stand them. One time they had a challenge on television where people had to put their heads in a tank of baked beans and fish around with their mouths to find money. I wouldn't do that for $100. It made me ill just watching them. But I love beans of all kinds, and put them in my cooking a lot. So I think it must be the sauce that I don't like. I buy them for my husband and son, but even the smell puts me off, so I try to get them to cook their own If I'm having a night off from cooking.

    5.  Righty or Lefty?
I'm right handed and so are both my kids. Both my mum and my husband's mum are ambidextrous, though they are self taught and are technically right handed. They can write both left and right handed as well as back to front and upside down. I always wished I was left handed when I heard an old wives tale that left handed people were more creative. My best friend in primary school is left handed. We would always sit next to each other in class and I would always sit on her right so our arms wouldn't bump when we were writing.

    A World in Love

    A world in Love badge
A World in Love Flikr Group

It's funny how things just seem to come together in unusual ways. When I was home schooling, this used to happen, we would start on a topic and then a book would come out or a documentary would come on television or someone would invite us on an excursion or group activity and it was all blended and interconnected. I think the main reason this would happen is because life is interconnected in this way. Life doesn't happen in subjects or categories.
Anyway, last year I was looking for a crafting challenge that I could do this year. I found out about Thing-a-day through Craft Gossip. So I joined up. Then when I was commenting on other people's thing-a-day items, I came across a post by Eddie from Grey Duckling where she had made a cute heart. It was similar to the ones I had made from Pip at Meet Me At Mike's. Eddie and her friend had decided to run a challenge that involved crafting a heart using any medium and photographing it in front of your favourite place and posting it on the Flickr group "A World in Love", in time for Valentine's Day, which is tomorrow. This also happens to be Library Lovers Day.
So I decided to do that challenge, too. I crafted a heart and took some photos in front of my State Library in Perth, Western Australia. I love the cultural centre so much. While I was there I took a heap more photos of my favourite places there, including the Museum, and the Art Gallery.
As it turned out, The State Library of WA was having the Library of Nearly Lost Moments display, where they were encouraging people to leave behind a small item to preserve a moment in time. So when I was finished photographing, that's what I did with my little heart. Then I took a photo (at the bottom of the post) of my moment on the wall with everyone else's moments.

    Hope you enjoy my pictures.

    Perth Bushfires - Feb 2011

It has been terrible in Australia. While one side of the country has been battling cyclones and floods, the other side has been battling bush fires fanned by heat and strong winds from cyclone Yasi.
There is information about the fires here.

The count is now at least 70 homes burnt and 30 plus damaged. People have been so generous with immediate relief, so they don't need food or clothing, but the Lord Mayor of Perth has started a relief fund for donations to help recover.

There is also some information on the City of Armadale website.

    Meet Me on Monday

A getting to know you meme by Java at "Never Growing Old" Click on the link above to join in.

    Questions:

    1.  Did you watch the Superbowl?
    2.  What is the last book that you read?
    3.  What is your favorite kind of cake?
    4.  Do you snore?
    5.  Do you play an instrument?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    My Answers!

    1.  Did you watch the Superbowl?

No, I don't really watch any sport unless my kids are playing in it. I have enjoyed the tennis when you are there live.

    2.  What is the last book that you read?

The last book I read was "The Hours" by Michael Cunningham. I thought it was amazing. Now I want to read some more Virginia Woolf.
If you are on Good Reads, join me - my link is on the side bar.

    3.  What is your favorite kind of cake?
My favourite cake is Black Forest, and lucky for me - my Mum & Dad bought me one for my birthday last week - yum!

    4.  Do you snore?
Yes, when my allergies are playing up.

       5.  Do you play an instrument?
Sadly, no. I tried when I was younger, but I think I'm tone deaf, plus my fingers were really small. It's something I regret, so I made sure my kids had music lessons. My daughter plays guitar and my son plays piano.

    Money Saving - cheap services

My daughter is doing her final assessments for hairdressing. So yesterday I was a hair model for the umpteenth time - this time for a haircut. It was an advanced cut, so I had layers, chipping in and some thinning done. I have so much hair it could provide wigs for two people. So I know it is unfair to complain that I am lucky enough to have too much hair, but it really gets hot and gives me headaches when it gets too thick. Now I feel light as if I am floating on a cloud.
While I was at the College, I was asked to be a hair model again for the first years, so they can practice braids, hair ups, blow drying - that type of thing - on long hair.
Anyway, it got me thinking - how many people are aware of the great services you can get very cheaply if you go for student services? The students are very careful and they are fully supervised the whole time. Your tastes are taken into account and you can have any type of hair. People think to be a hair model you need to have great hair, but that isn't so. They need people with thin hair, thick hair, different colours who want foils, highlights, all over colours, resistant grey, men's cuts, ladies cuts and so on. This is a great opportunity to save money and help a student - because we all had to learn - didn't we?
Other services which can be obtained this way include, beauty therapy, massage, personal training, vet services, psychology services, dentistry, and the like. I once had a full pilates schedule tailored for me for free for a final assessment for a trainer.  The best option is to contact the Public Colleges, Private Colleges, Training organisations, Universities and so on.
Some have information on their websites regarding which services they offer and they have price lists which you can view beforehand.
If you home school this can also be a great learning opportunity to see inside some of the training colleges, while the kids get their hair or teeth done or some other service.
So I hope you consider saving some money and helping a student get their qualification - it's a good feeling.
