"Old Possum's Guide to Practical Cats"

The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Op Shop finds

I have been bargain hunting and I have found some cute things, but I really haven't had the time or inclination to share. Sorry :(
Anyway, yesterday was a very good day and I thought I would share a couple of finds.
Firstly I love this cute melamine jug and this retro canister. I got these for 50 cents each. Bargain.

I also got this Fiddler on the Roof record for $1.00 - it is the original soundtrack from the film and has some cool insert pictures with stills from the movie. My mother loves musicals and she introduced them to us at a young age, so I've seen all the classics. She even took me to see My Fair Lady at the picture theatre when I was little.

The Diving Bell & the Butterfly - Movie

Warning: May contain spoilers!

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is based upon the book Le Scaphandre Et Le Papillon by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Now remember that - "based upon" because for cinematic effect there are some personal relationships that were different from the book, and also (sadly) some people, including his girlfriend, were incorrectly portrayed and not nicely. But look past this to the heart of the story. A man with "locked-in" syndrome after he suffers at stroke at 43 years old, is encouraged to learn to communicate and then writes a book. It is an amazing story and that part is true. I really enjoyed this film. Perhaps if you watch it, you may want to read the articles I have linked at the bottom afterwards, so it doesn't spoil your viewing. But remember not to judge the characters too harshly until you know the whole story. Alternately you may like to read the book. Either way, I hope you find it as inspiring as I did.

Here are the articles I mentioned earlier:

Cat Thursday - Back Again!

There have been a lot of changes in our family over the last couple of years. My butcher hubby has changed from butchering to teaching apprentices. We finished homeschooling. I went back to Uni again. Our daughter got married and started her own business. Our son finished school and is looking forward to a whole new world. We also lost our dear doggy pal.
The economy has changed, we are managing on less money, the interest rates have risen a couple of times, water is up, electricity is up, and gas is up. And because I no longer get family payments - for the first time in many, many years - I have no money or allowance to call my own. So we've tightened our belts and everyone's been great about it. We can't afford expensive presents or holidays and we've cut back on luxuries, at least until I finish Uni. Now this is not a sob story - just a fact of life. Everyone is on board - except the CAT!
I have found a jelly meat she really likes as well as a couple of fishy cat foods. So I thought that I could cut back to the cheaper cat biscuits, since she only grazes on them during the day and has her proper meal at night. Nooooo! We have had so many hilarious arguments this week about her eating the biscuits and her telling us "no way - give me the ones I like" and so on. She's finally taken to eating them if we mix them with a bit of cat meat. So I guess it's back to her favourite brand next shopping day. How I wish she was as easy to fool as the kids when they were little and their school holiday treat was generic "fruity rings".

Anyway, I come across so many beautiful cat pictures in my travels about the internet that it's sometimes hard to choose. But I liked this kitteh for my friend Troythulu who is a Lovecraftian.

And I liked this one, because as I've said before something about cats & computers does it for me - ROFLOL :)

Berlin Syndrome - Melanie Joosten

Today I'm reviewing Berlin Syndrome by Melanie Joosten a young Australian author. This is her first novel and what a fantastic effort. I received this book from Good Reads as a Giveaway, which was great because I was going to buy it anyway. I love supporting Aussie authors and this book intrigued me.
Now when I get excited, I'm all "yay" and "awesome" so it can sound like I'm not genuine, but I really only do it about things I love and am excited about. So believe me this book is fantastic.
If you had asked me at the beginning, I would have said that I wasn't sure. I was so busy with Uni that it took me a couple of weeks to get through the first part. I was also feeling rather uncomfortable with the developments in the book. If this was a romance there was something that was "off" about it. But I am the sort of lady who feels uncomfortable about how deceitful and false people can be in their relationships, while I also assume a lot of people are that way. Now here's the clever bit - this is exactly how the author wanted us to feel, and her writing is so subtle you couldn't quite put your finger on it.
Then BAM - big surprise half way through the book - and I finished the second half in two days because I just couldn't put it down. Luckily I never stop reading books. I can count on one hand the books I have started and not finished - because I understand that books need to be read as a whole and it's not fair to judge by half a book. But I'm so glad I persevered with this book, because the book was so cleverly done that it was difficult for me to read because of some personal experiences - but not - let me repeat - not because it is not well written and beautifully handled. You know when you meet someone and you think that you should have realised early on, and then you are sorry - well I'm glad my instincts were spot on with these characters - I feel more powerful, because I just got it. Joosten is spot on in some places with the psyche of the characters - it's powerful and frightening.
If you are delicate there are a couple of swear words and a couple of scenes which may offend, but they are necessary and well placed and not at all gratuitous. I just warn, because I know when my Mum & Dad have swapped books, they have been a little shocked at books that I just find normal.
So without giving too much away, Clare is in Berlin, photographing old buildings in Europe for a book she is working on, when she meets Andi, a local English teacher. Their mutual attraction quickly leads to an intense relationship - the kind you can only have with a stranger. Then comes a twist. The Berlin Wall is an important backdrop as well as a metaphor. What happens next makes you question not only the people you don't know well, but the people you see everyday. What are any of us capable of, and what will we rationalise in order to get what we want? Do people you work with, even your own family members have something inside them that they can hide even from you?
I gave this book five stars.
