Hey, Back Off! - Bullying (Part 2 in a 3 part series)

Read Part 1 hereI was recently invited to read Hey Back Off  Written by Jennie Withers with Phyllis Hendrickson M. Ed.  You can find Jennie Withers online at her web page. In this part two on bullying, I review the book.
As you can see from the photo above, I marked a lot of passages in this book. I found many pearls of wisdom, as well as practical advice for both children and their parents when it comes to handling these situations.
The first thing that struck me about this book is how it clearly lays out what bullying and harassment are and the different types of  harassment. This is particularly helpful for two reasons. Firstly, some people doubt themselves when dealing with episodes of bullying or harassment. If people say they are just being overly sensitive they may start to believe that they are the problem. Jennie Withers clearly lays out the ways someone can be harassed - so you can be clear in your mind that this person's behaviour is not acceptable and you have done nothing wrong to deserve such treatment. Secondly, it helps when you can use appropriate language to describe the types of bullying you (or your child) received. It is helpful if you have to report the matter to clarify your thoughts.
The next part of the book discusses the different types of personalities that we have. You can take a quiz to see what types of behaviours you display as a child or parent. There are helpful tips in turning passive behaviour into active behaviour, and turning aggressive behaviour into assertive behaviour.
The book then talks about different types of scenarios with real examples of the behaviours and language of harassment, with counter-measures you and your child can use in particular situations.
When I was bullied and when my children were bullied, the hardest thing was removing the emotion from the situation enough to deal with the situation with a calm demeanour. I think this book gives great advice, so you can feel prepared and have many tools available to plan your strategies, before you confront the situation. I'm sure this is a toolbox any parent will be grateful to have at their fingertips.
When the kids were little, I had a handy book for when they were sick and I could check symptoms and decide whether we could handle this ourselves or get help. I think that "Hey, Back Off!" is the same kind of tool, and would be just as useful for the same reasons. Your child's mental well-being is just as important as their physical health. It has taken a while for us, as a society, to realise that - but now we can take positive action to ensure our children's childhood is as it should be.
One small note - there is a chapter discussing the law. If you don't live in the US you can easily check to see what the laws are in your country regarding harassment. Many countries have recently made changes to their laws to encompass the various types of bullying or harassment using technology. A good example is this case in Australia/US where the police worked together and made an arrest:

Australian Teen Accused Of Cyberbullying Grafton Girl

As parents we need to educate ourselves about what is happening with young people and how to use the technology they are using. Otherwise we won't know how to give them strategies to keep them safe. Jennie Wither's book is a great start and I highly recommend it.

Oooh look - Pretty Things on Pinterest!

Aren't we all just suckers for new social networking? - I know I am. I really liked the visual aspect of Tumblr, and the bookmarking abilities of Diigo, but now Pinterest lets us both bookmark and create inspiration boards and organise the bookmarks the way we choose. What;'s not to love?

Here's some recent inspiration via Pinterest. To go to original source then see the links below each image.

Know your meme...

Do you find yourself wondering what a lolcat is? wondering why kids are referring to sad Keanu? or thinking - why are people sending me to that Rick Astley song all the time? Then you could be one of the few who isn't aware of Internet memes and the way they virally carry cultural ideas and stories from social networking accounts to emails and back again. Much like a virus, they evolve to try and keep themselves alive.
If you need to understand more about meme culture, or you just want to join the fun, then you can visit Know Your Meme. This handy site is a database of all things meme - and never again will you have to ask "Who's Rebecca Black?"

What are you eating?

Despite the start of Autumn - it's still quite hot here. So we've been having light lunches and dinners. My daughter and I had a lovely lunch at a Sushi Bar the other day, I think it would be worth taking your esky bag and taking your dinner home from those places. So yummy & fresh.
I have had a food crush on spinach and feta lately as well. So I threw together some of these mini pizza's with spinach, feta, sun dried tomato and a sprinkle of mozzarella. My son likes anchovies on his, too.
I also, enjoyed the lovely food fare when we were in Margaret River, so it encouraged me to put together some tasting plates. Meats, cheeses, pickles, Turkish bread, olive oil and caramelised balsamic vinegar.

So what do the food critics say?

Beatrix Potter (one of my Guinea pigs) says: "I really like the spinach". And May Gibbs (the other Guinea Pig) says: "I have what Beatrix has - because I always steal her food."

Jiggly Puff says: "Those Guinea Pigs don't know what they are talking about - the cheese is the best bit..."

So what's the fare like in your household at the moment? Comfort food or light and easy?

Bye for now.

On Toby's Terms - Charmaine Hammond

Some of you may remember that when I started this blog I was very much a dog person as well as a cat person. But last year, we lost our doggy pal after 15 years which I wrote about here

So when Charmaine Hammond contacted me to ask if I would like to read her books On Toby's Terms and Toby, The Pet Therapy Dog & his hospital friends, I was so excited to receive a book to review with a dog as the main character.
When I received the books, I quickly read the children's version with my nephew. We both loved the character of Toby, and were even more thrilled to know that it was a true story. Toby really is a pet therapy dog, and Miss Charmaine  really is his owner and the writer of the book. Mr Nephew was keen to know more, so we read the book and discussed the questions on the last page. He asked lots of questions about Toby, Charmaine and why I was reviewing the book. It was a lovely reading session and we both really enjoyed reading about Toby and Miss Charmaine very much.
As many of you know, I have been struggling with health issues on and off for a while, so this sort of held me up in my reading and reviewing, so sincere apologies to Charmaine Hammond and to those interested in her work.
However, I finally got to read and review On Toby's Terms. I have to say that I love this book. It is one of those stories you want to keep talking about to people, but then I am torn because I don't want to give too much of the story away because I want them to enjoy it for themselves.
This story is very readable, with just the right balance between fun and drama, laughter and tears, anxiety and happiness...and you will feel all of these emotions reading this book. Charmaine's easy narrative style, made me feel like I knew her, Chris and Toby as neighbourhood friends. You could just imagine having friends telling their dinner party stories about their loveable dog who oscillates between exuberance and anxiety, and is so rambunctious he needs a job to keep him occupied.
Charmaine and Chris decided to adopt an older dog. Many of us have thought similar things, that we weren't in a position for another puppy, or that there were so many lovely older dogs waiting for adoption, that it seems wiser and kinder to choose this option. But were they in for a surprise? Toby exhibited all kinds of strange behaviours, from tearing up the house when they were away, to locking himself in the bathroom and proceeding to bang the toilet lid and ruin the cistern cover (so many times that the Hammonds started to buy the replacement covers in bulk).
What happens throughout the story will tug at your emotions and have you re-assessing your own relationships with everyone both four and two legged. Charmaine and Chris never give up on Toby, they keep seeking help, making compromises and finding solutions. Their life is thrown into turmoil, and yet they learn to accept that a little chaos and unpredictability sometimes comes with the joy of loving and being loved. They see Toby's good qualities and try to harness his energies in positive ways.
One of the ways Toby uses his skills to help people is as a pet therapy dog, and I find it fitting that some of the patients he helps have mental health issues just like he does. It's seems he is helping himself by helping others, which is a good message for us all.
On Toby's Terms has so many funny and interesting moments, but one of my favourite parts is where a lady at dog training says that Toby will never be accepted as a pet therapy dog. Like many of us have learned, success is it's own reward - and of course Toby succeeded.
I would be remiss, if I didn't mention Charmaine and Chris' personal campaign to warn dog owners of the dangers of throwing sticks for your dog to fetch. Toby sustained an injury, which you can read about in the book, which serves as a warning. It's much better to use toys designed specifically for dog play.

Keep an eye out this week. I am giving away a copy of both books to one lucky reader, thanks to Charmaine Hammond and Toby. (Update: You can now enter at this link)

Diane Keaton is one of my favourite actresses. I just had to share this gorgeous picture of her with a cat. Also, how can you not admire an actress that gets to kiss Keanu Reeves?

Hugs and cheers,
