How loud is too loud? What?

Now we have such busy lives, always on the move, more people are discovering the joys of music and audio books that they can listen to while they jog, drive, craft or otherwise multi-task. There are great collections of audio books and music at your local library and they are free to borrow. But with the use of audio material there are always important safety tips to consider.

When listening to music or audio books there are two important considerations, hearing health and hygiene.

The following diagram from Sound Advice shows the levels where the frequency is becoming dangerous.
The level of decibels for a rock band or even an orchestra are around the levels where hearing protection should be considered. However, some of us then use earphones to channel this sound right into our ears. Please consider that when you are listening to a sound recording such as a talking book, the introduction (or when it is time to change CD's) can sometimes have quite loud music as well. This needs to be considered so you don't get a sudden burst of sound into your ear.

This diagram from Dangerous Decibels shows when permanent hearing damage can occur.

National Hearing Care states that the following can be symptoms of hearing loss:
• difficulty following conversation in a group
• difficulty following conversation in competing background noise
• difficulty hearing the television at normal volume
• a lack of clarity of speech in a one to one listening situation
• distortion of music sound quality
• reduced tolerance to loud sounds
tinnitus
Tips and Hints:

  • Consider using your speakers rather than earphones to listen whenever possible.
  • If you are using headphones try to choose the ones that cover your ears as shown below, rather than the earbuds that you put inside your ear.
  • If you must use earbuds, then don't share them with anyone, and clean or change them regularly. This is because dangerous bacteria can accumulate in the buds and cause harm to your ear through infections.
  • Ensure your earphones are in good working order, so you don't get any crackle or interference.
  • Whether you are using speakers or earphones, keep the sound at a tolerable level. Your ears should not be ringing afterwards.
  • Rest your ears - give your ears a five minute break every hour so they are not constantly bombarded with concentrated sound.

Welcome to the Local Studies Library...

Perhaps you didn't know that there is more than one type of Library. There are school libraries, public libraries, academic libraries and specialist libraries (such as a Law or Science Library).
This post is a bit of information about a Local Studies Library in Western Australia. For a list of Local Studies Libraries in your area,  your State Library or Historical Society is a good place to start. Such as this list of Local Studies Libraries in my state:
The Local Studies Library I am discussing today is:

Birtwistle Local Studies Library
  Armadale, Western Australia

Ivor T. Birtwistle, c1933.

The library is named after Ivor Birtwistle (1892 - 1976). Birtwistle was the editor at The Western Mail. He was also a keen historian and founding member of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society. When he moved to the Armadale region, he was a Shire councillor and founded the Armadale-Kelmscott Historical Society.

CatDog Thursday

So who remembers CatDog? My kids would watch this show, and I didn't get it. I mean I'm all for crazy stuff, but how did that thing go to the bathroom? Especially with all the food it used to eat. But then I would remember it's a cartoon. Sigh!

Why I'm happy to keep destroying the joint....

Unless I am talking about bullying or cruelty to animals, I don't really get serious on this blog. Let's face it - I talk about fluff. I talk about TV shows, movies, vintage stuff, books, crafts and my cat. So unless you know me IRL or are a particularly close online friend, you won't know that I have a very serious side and I will not tolerate hate or discrimination based upon gender, race, religion, philosophy, sexual preference, age or abilities. I also, get very serious about child abuse. Thus the anti-bullying stance.

But I'm going to get serious - so if you don't want to listen to my politics, that's fine and have a cup of tea and move onto another blog.

But I want to have my little rant and if you read it, then thanks.

Here in Australia, there has been a call to arms to stop the misogynistic behavior towards women in politics. If you aren't aware of the "Destroy the Joint" movement, then you can read about it here:
Destroy the Joint

and here:

You can also join the Facebook page, and keep in touch with what is going on in the protests.

About 20 years ago, I was chatting with someone who was a friend of a friend at a party, and he basically implied that you don't need feminism anymore because women already have equal opportunities. This was when I was at University the first time, and the first female engineering student had been accepted into the course. In my lifetime, and I'm not that old, there are still first such as our first female Prime Minister in Australia. So yes, there is still a need for feminism.

More importantly there are still men that think it's okay to talk about violence (and rape) against women just because they don't like them or they disagree with what they say. For an example in the Skeptic community, see here. (Thanks to Martin & Troy for the link to this). There's examples in the gaming community, see here

So what do politics, gaming and skepticism have in common? They were all traditionally male arenas. The men are getting upset that having women in theses areas of public life will "destroy the joint". (I emphasise not ALL men feel that way). But, I'm thinking that some of these joints need to be destroyed. Some of these institutions need to be challenged, some of these men need to learn to share - and not in the way a child in the playground would share grudgingly, then try to trip you when you aren't looking.

If I had a house and it was perfect, then I certainly wouldn't want someone to come and destroy it. But if I had a house that needed fixing, then by knocking down a few walls and letting in some light and fresh air, I am really making the house better and more accommodating. But the grumpy old man, who liked living in the dark and lived in that house before I moved in, might very well feel I was "destroying the joint" and he'll have to learn to live with that.

The humble rubber band.

Once you get to my age you can list dozens of uses for everyday objects like the humble rubber band. I have been using them since I was little for so many things. As kids we tied our hair with them (yes I know that's naughty and I don't do it now), my parents would always have to cut the bands out of my hair. We used to make lacky guns with our fingers and get told we would take an eye out. We used them to make flying helicopters, on our braces to straighten our teeth, to wrap up posters, tie bunches of invites together and many more.
When we were in Thailand we went on a tour to ride  elephants, but while we were there, our guide Annie showed us some of the traditional Thai farming methods, including the rubber industry. Suddenly an object I took for granted, will never be the same.

Cat Thursday - hunting!

My busy day starts from the moment I get out of bed. As soon as I go to the bathroom the guinea pigs hear me and start whistling for some food. Once they have grains, grass and greens, then I feed the fish. The chickens have started up by now, scratching and clucking. So I feed them any scraps, check their water and pellets, sometimes give them cracked corn and collect the eggs. Every few days I let them out for a scratch around the yard depending upon what I am doing and what the weather is like. Meanwhile Jigglypuff has been following me around to check what the other animals of her kingdom are getting. Then when I walk back to the house she attacks me and then races me to the back door. She demands more biscuits even though hubby would have fed her some breakfast. Then when I have breakfast she likes to see what she can scrounge from me. By this time she has checked out if my son is up and about, so she can scrounge something from him. This continues for the rest of the day until it's dinner time. The hunting habits of the domestic cat are exhausting.

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett; Colin Firth as Mr Darcy; Lyme Park as Pemberley

For the longest time, I avoided Austenesque novels thinking it may spoil my beloved Jane Austen's work. I've never really gotten into fan fiction either. Although I had read I Was Jane Austen's Best Friend by Cora Harrison.
A bookworm friend suggested I take a peak at the series Lost in Austen, and I really quite enjoyed it. I could see it came from a place of admiration. (I still can't quite get over the idea of Pride & Prejudice and Zombies). Well, anyway, a while back I won Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James and I wasn't sure what to expect.
Like everyone I hoped that Elizabeth and Darcy would be happy. I was certain that Bingley and Jane were a good match. Would Mr Wickham ever get his come-uppance and would Lydia's and his marriage last? What about the younger Bennett sisters? Would dear Mr Bennett ever get any peace?
P.D. James does an excellent job of providing the answers to these questions and more. I truly lost myself in the world she created and on more than one occasion had to remind myself that I was not actually reading Austen. The characters felt so familiar.
Underlying all this is an excellent mystery to keep the pages turning and to acknowledge what we all knew. That when Mr Darcy married Elizabeth he would be brother-in-law to Mr Wickham and that is something that would continue to serve as a threat to their happy world, no matter what else they did to pretend it would all be okay.
When Captain Denny goes missing near Pemberley and is found dead, all the family skeletons will be coming out of the closet. Mr Wickham is found with him, covered in blood and in shock.  How will the Darcy's deal with this event? What about the Bingley's? After all, Lydia is a sister, no matter her unfortunate choice of a husband. Their pride will be put to the test once more as well as their loyalties and strength.

This week I thought I would re-visit with Beatrix Potter since one of my guinea pigs is named after her.
Beatrix Potter was the author and illustrator of

You can read the whole book here at Project Gutenberg. I don't like it very much when the kittens get smacked. But I love it when they have taken all their silly clothes off and are sitting on the wall.

This cuddly Tom Kitten is available at the Peter Rabbit Shop.
